The three reinforcement methods
- AR-glass fiber. Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) blends alkali-resistant glass fibers into the mix; the fibers add flexural strength and let the slab be cast thinner with fewer wide cracks.
- Steel mesh. Welded wire or small-gauge mesh placed mid-section holds the slab together if it cracks and limits crack width under load.
- Rebar, used carefully. No. 3 rebar is 3/8 inch in diameter — too large to bury safely in a 1.5-inch top, where it can telegraph a crack along its own line. It belongs only in thicker sections with adequate cover.
The takeaway is that the right reinforcement keeps inevitable cracks cosmetic; the wrong reinforcement, set too shallow or too coarse, can create the very cracks it was meant to prevent.
AR-glass and the standard behind it
The glass in GFRC is not ordinary fiberglass. It is alkali-resistant glass made to survive the high-pH cement environment, specified under ASTM C1666, with the alkali resistance coming from a high zirconia content in the fiber. That standard is the reason a glass-reinforced top holds its strength for decades instead of having its fibers eaten by the cement.
Repairing a Stable Crack
A stable cosmetic crack in a concrete countertop is repaired in place: the crack is cleaned, filled with a flowable epoxy or color-matched filler, leveled, and the surface is resealed. How to Seal a Concrete Countertop in Florida

- A sacrificial coat buffed over the sealer that takes daily abuse and is reapplied on a maintenance schedule, preserving the sealer beneath it. It is a top-up, not a substitute for sealing.
