What Each Wall Is

A pony wall is a short framed wall finished with tile; a glass block wall is a stack of hollow glass units mortared into a single self-supporting mass. The pony wall, defined
A pony wall — interchangeably a knee wall or half wall in shower work — is a partial-height stud or block wall that stops well below the ceiling. In a shower it does two jobs: it blocks splash from the open side and it gives a fixed glass panel something solid to anchor to. Because it is framed conventionally, the same waterproofing rules that govern a full shower wall apply to it, including its exposed top.
The three things a pony wall does

Glass block is a self-supporting but non-load-bearing assembly: the blocks carry their own weight in a mortared matrix but never the building's structure. Each block is hollow, cannot be cut, and the wall is laid out in full units. The mortar joints, not a separate membrane, are what keep water out of the wall — which is exactly why the install tolerances matter so much in a wet area.
Pony Wall Height and Build
A shower pony wall is typically framed to a finished height of 36 to 48 in. The lower end keeps the wall open and airy; the taller end gives more splash control and a leanable edge if you add a bench. The right number depends on what the wall is doing — privacy, glass support, or a seat back.
How tall, and why
- 36 in.
- A minimal splash guard. It contains water near the floor and keeps the room open, but offers little privacy and a low place for a glass panel to start.
- 42 in.
- The most common shower pony wall height. It is tall enough to anchor a fixed glass panel cleanly and block most splash, while staying below sightline for a sense of openness.
- 48 in.
- Used when the wall doubles as a bench back or where extra privacy is wanted. The taller the wall, the more it reads as a partition rather than a curb extension.
Framing on a Florida slab
On slab-on-grade construction, the pony wall is framed differently from an interior partition because its base sits in the splash zone. The order of operations is what keeps the framing dry for the life of the shower.
Building it dry from the slab up
- Pressure-treated bottom plate where the wall meets the wet floor, mechanically fastened to the slab.
- Plumb, rigid framing — any flex telegraphs into the tile and cracks the grout.
- Wet-area tile backer on both faces and the cap, not standard drywall.
- Cap framed with a slight inward pitch so the finished top sheds water back into the shower, not out onto the bathroom floor.
Get the base plate and the pitch right at framing and the rest of the assembly is routine; miss either and no amount of surface tile will keep the cavity dry.
Pairing the glass panel
The reason most Florida homeowners choose a pony wall over a full enclosure is the single fixed glass panel it carries. One panel mounted on the cap means far less hardware than a framed door — no bottom track to trap water, fewer gaskets, and a cleaner line of sight. The wall does the heavy lifting; the glass just finishes the open span.
Waterproofing the Top
The pony wall cap is the single most common failure point, because it is a horizontal wet surface that most people treat as decorative trim. Under tile-industry practice, that cap must be sloped and wrapped in a continuous bonded waterproof membrane — not just tiled and grouted.
Why the cap fails
Water lands on the cap during every shower. If the top is flat and only the tile and grout stand between water and the wood inside, moisture wicks through the grout, sits on the framing, and feeds rot and mold inside the wall cavity — a fast process in Florida's year-round humidity. The fix is geometry plus a membrane: pitch the cap so water runs back into the shower, then make the surface itself waterproof beneath the tile.
The membrane that does it
The TCNA shower methods call for a bonded waterproof membrane meeting ANSI A118.10, applied continuously and carried through every change of plane — up the wall, over the cap, and down the other face. The membrane, not the cement board and not the grout, is the waterproofing layer. The same logic governs the wall tile and cap on every wet surface in the shower.
The cap, step by step

Build the top plate so the finished cap slopes back toward the shower interior, so standing water drains in, not out.

Sheathe in a wet-area backer
Cover both faces and the cap in a tile backer approved for wet walls — the rigid substrate the membrane bonds to.

Wrap a continuous membrane
Apply an ANSI A118.10 sheet or liquid membrane over both faces and across the cap with no breaks at the corners.

Tile and seal the joints
Set tile on the cured membrane, then finish the cap with a sloped, non-porous grout to shed surface water.
Skip any one of those steps on the cap and the wall fails from the inside out, often before it shows on the surface. The membrane is what makes a pony wall a permanent Florida fixture rather than a future demolition.
The Glass Block Wall
Glass block solves the cap problem by removing it: the wall is solid, light-passing, and waterproofed by its own mortar joints rather than a hidden membrane. It builds up from the shower curb as a self-contained mass and reads as a translucent screen instead of a tiled partition.
How it goes up
Blocks are laid in courses on the curb, bedded in mortar with spacers and reinforcing where the run is long or tall. Because the units are nonabsorbent and cannot be trimmed, the layout has to be planned to full blocks, and the mortar work is unforgiving — this is skilled masonry, not a quick set. The finished wall is rigid, bright, and effectively permanent.
Thickness and weight
Shower glass block comes in two nominal thicknesses, and the choice costs you both interior space and dead load on a slab where every inch and every pound counts.

- The slimmer series, the popular choice for showers because it gives back roughly three-quarters of an inch of interior width and runs 15-20% lighter than the standard block.

- The traditional block; more mass and a deeper joint, but it eats more of a tight Florida shower footprint.

Model code is explicit that glass block "shall not bear any load other than its own weight." Pick by condition
- If the shower is tight (under ~32 in. deep) — a pony wall or a thinline 3-1/8 in. block protects usable space; a 4 in. block likely does not.
