How Much Overhang for Seating
Comfortable island seating needs a knee overhang deep enough for legs to tuck under the counter without hitting the cabinet. The depth scales with counter height: the NKBA calls for roughly 12 in of clear knee space at 42 in bar height, 15 in at 36 in counter height, and 18 in at 30 in table height. The lower the surface, the deeper your knees travel under it.
Those are the clear-space minimums, measured from the cabinet face to the edge of the counter. Most installers add a small margin so a stool can slide fully in. The practical default for a counter-height island is a 15 in overhang; a true bar-height ledge can work at 12 in because seated legs angle down rather than straight in.
Why depth changes with height
At a low table, your thighs sit almost level and reach deep under the top, so the cantilever has to be long. At a tall bar, your legs hang and your knees stay closer to the edge, so a shorter overhang still clears. Pick the seat height first, then the overhang follows from it — not the other way around.
Measuring it on a real island
Overhang is the horizontal distance the countertop projects beyond the cabinet box. On a standard 24 in deep base cabinet, a 12 in overhang yields a 36 in deep island top on the seating side. That extra foot of stone is the part doing the structural work, and it is the number that decides whether your slab needs support underneath.
How Many Stools Fit
Count seats by width, not by eye. A comfortable adult seat needs about 24 in of island length per stool so elbows and hips are not fighting. Divide the seating run by 24 to get the realistic count: a 6 ft (72 in) clear run seats three; an 8 ft (96 in) run seats four.
Stools themselves are usually 16 to 20 in wide, and the extra width is breathing room and pull-out space. Squeeze the spacing below 24 in and the island looks like it seats more than it comfortably does — the classic mistake on a Florida open-concept island that tries to seat five where four belong.
Corner and return seating
Seating that wraps a corner eats more width because the diagonal stool needs clearance on two sides. Treat a corner seat as needing about 30 in of run on each leg so the knees of adjacent diners do not collide under the slab. An L-return is a good way to add a fourth or fifth seat without lengthening the main run.
Common stool-count mistakes
- Counting by stool width, not seat allowance — three 18 in stools fit a 60 in run on paper, but real elbows need 24 in each.
- Forgetting the leg posts — table or island legs at the ends steal knee room from the nearest seat.
- Crowding a corner — two stools meeting at a 90-degree corner collide unless each leg gets about 30 in.
- Ignoring the appliance below — a beverage fridge or microwave drawer under the overhang kills the knee space for that seat.
Each of these turns an island that looks like it seats five into one that comfortably seats four, so count by allowance and subtract for anything intruding under the top.
Translating width into a real island
Read the diagram as a budget: every inch of comfortable knee space spends part of your slab's unsupported span. If the seat dimension you want exceeds what the stone can hold, you change the thickness or you add support — those are the only two levers.
Counter Height vs Bar Height
The two common seated islands are counter height and bar height, and they drive different stool, knee, and overhang numbers. Counter height is a 36 in top with 24-26 in stools and a 15 in overhang; bar height is a 42 in top with 30 in stools and a 12 in overhang. A third option, true table height at 30 in, pairs with standard 18 in chairs.
Counter height is the Florida favorite because it sits flush with the main run, so the island reads as one clean surface for entertaining. Bar height adds a raised ledge that hides kitchen clutter from the living room — useful in an open-concept layout, but it stacks a taller cantilever higher off the floor.

Why the seat-to-counter gap matters
Aim for about 10-12 in between the seat top and the underside of the counter so thighs clear with room to cross legs. If you pick a 26 in stool for a 36 in counter, that is a 10 in gap — comfortable. Mismatch the pair and tall users either bang their knees or perch too low to eat.
Picking one for an open-concept Florida kitchen
When you are opening the kitchen to the living space, counter height usually wins: it keeps sightlines low and the island feels like a continuous social surface. Reserve bar height for when you specifically want to screen the cooktop side from the seating side.
When the Overhang Needs Support
An island overhang is a cantilever of stone, and stone has a published unsupported limit by thickness. The Natural Stone Institute (formerly the Marble Institute of America, MIA) puts the limit at about 6 in for 2cm (3/4 in) material and about 10 in for 3cm (1-1/4 in) material — and in no case may the cantilever exceed one-third of the slab's total width.
This is the collision at the heart of island design. The seating you want (12-15 in of overhang) routinely exceeds what a 2cm slab can hold (6 in). So either you specify a thicker 3cm slab, you build the cabinet box out to shorten the unsupported run, or you add concealed support. Does your overhang need brackets?
- Overhang 6 in or less, any thickness — generally no support needed; the slab cantilevers safely.
- Overhang 6-10 in on a 3cm slab — usually fine unsupported, as long as no more than one-third of the width overhangs.
- Overhang over 6 in on a 2cm slab — add corbels or steel brackets; 2cm alone will not hold a seating overhang.
- Overhang over 10 in on any slab — add support, regardless of thickness, and verify the one-third rule.
The one-third rule is the quiet constraint people forget: a 15 in overhang technically needs at least a 30 in deep slab so two-thirds (the back 20-plus in) rests on the cabinet. On a normal 24 in base, a deep seating overhang almost always lands you in bracket territory unless the slab is 3cm.
How the support is built in
When support is required, it goes in before the slab is set, hidden in or on the cabinet so the finished overhang still looks like floating stone. The two common methods carry the load differently and read differently in the room.
Corbels versus concealed steel
Corbels are visible decorative brackets that carry load from below; concealed steel plates are let into the cabinet top so the underside of the overhang looks clean. Steel is the modern default for a floating-look island; corbels suit a traditional kitchen where the support is meant to be seen.

In coastal and HVHZ Florida, the hidden steel under an overhang is a corrosion question, not just a strength question. Salt-laden air migrates into cabinets and condensation lingers in a humid kitchen, so plain mild-steel brackets sealed out of sight can rust and weaken where no one is looking.
For a Florida coastal kitchen, specify stainless or properly coated steel supports and corrosion-resistant fasteners, the same logic used for island installation hardware near the water. The bracket is structural, and a structural part that corrodes silently inside a cabinet is exactly the failure you do not see until the overhang sags.
Heavy stone is the Florida norm
Florida kitchens lean heavily on natural stone and engineered quartz, which are dense and heavy. A long granite or quartzite overhang puts real load on its support, so the bracket spec follows the material: a heavier slab and a longer cantilever both push you toward stiffer, closer-spaced steel.
Walkways Around the Island
Seating depth and walkway width are one problem, not two. The NKBA calls for at least 36 in of walkway in general kitchen aisles and 42-44 in where a person walks behind a seated diner — measured to the wall or obstruction once a stool is pulled out.
A pulled-out stool can stick 18-24 in beyond the counter edge, so the real clearance is the aisle minus the stool. Plan the seating side against the most generous open space — usually the living-room side of an open-concept layout — so traffic still flows when the island is full. - Work aisle (cook side): at least 42 in, or 48 in for two cooks, so appliance doors and bodies pass.
- Seating side, no through traffic: 32 in of clear space behind the counter edge per NKBA.

- Pulled-out stool reach: budget 18-24 in beyond the counter edge before anyone passes.
If the aisle math does not work, the island is too big for the room — and shrinking the seating overhang or the seat count is usually the fix, not moving walls. That trade-off is why seating and walkways belong on the same drawing.
