In a 5-by-8 ft bathroom — the most common Florida builder layout — that is a meaningful share of the room dedicated to nothing but the door's swing.
How a pocket door reclaims that floor
A pocket door slides on a track into a hollow framed cavity inside the adjacent wall. When open, the leaf is fully inside the wall, so it costs essentially 0 sq ft of swing. The trade is that the receiving wall must be built or rebuilt as a pocket wall, and plumbing or electrical in that wall has to be rerouted around the cavity — a real consideration on a Florida slab where the wet wall is often nearby.
Why a barn door is the fast retrofit
A barn door hangs from a wall-mounted track and slides across the face of the wall beside the opening. Why a swing door seals best
A swing door closes into a stopped jamb on all four sides and latches. The leaf fully fills the rough opening, the stop blocks the perimeter gap, and a latch holds it shut. That is the most complete light and sound seal of the three, which is why a primary or guest bath that needs real privacy still defaults to a swing door when floor space allows.
Why a barn door leaks privacy
A barn door does not seal. It hangs over the opening with a wall offset of about 3/8 in, and its top, sides, and bottom are open edges. Those edge gaps are a direct path for light bleed and sound transmission, and a sliding barn door has no built-in latch. You can narrow the gaps with extra leaf overlap and pile weatherstrip, but a barn door will not match a stopped, latched swing door for privacy in a bathroom no matter what you add.
What actually helps a barn door
- Overlap the opening generously — size the leaf wider and taller than the rough opening so there is more material covering the edge gap.
- Add pile weatherstrip at the jambs and head to choke the perimeter air path that carries light and sound.
- Specify a solid-core leaf — mass is what lowers sound transmission; a hollow barn slab transmits noise readily.
- Install a privacy latch rated for sliding hardware so the door can be locked from inside.
Even with all four, a barn door remains a privacy compromise. It earns its place on a powder room, a primary-suite bath shared by a couple, or a closet — not a bathroom where sound isolation is a hard requirement.
Where a pocket door lands on privacy
A pocket door sits between the two. It fills the opening like a swing door and accepts a privacy latch, so its closed-face seal is good. But it slides into a jamb rather than closing against a four-sided stop, so it is marginally leakier than a swing door at the lead edge. For most bathrooms that difference is immaterial; for a shared wall against a bedroom, a swing door with a full stop is still the tightest.

Solid-core and moisture-rated: the slab that stays flat
A solid-core door has a dense engineered or composite core. The mass resists warping and shrinking through humidity swings, holds its shape in the jamb, and carries far more sound mass than a hollow leaf. For a bathroom specifically, a solid-core, moisture-resistant, factory-primed slab is the durable choice — and a primed paint-grade leaf is easier to seal against moisture on all six faces than a raw door.
What to specify on a Florida bath door order
- Solid-core construction — a dense composite core, not a honeycomb, for dimensional stability in humidity.
- Moisture-resistant rating — a leaf rated for damp service so the skins do not bubble or delaminate.
- Factory priming — a sealed, paint-ready surface that lets you finish all six faces and choke moisture uptake.
- Sealed edges — confirm the top, bottom, and latch mortise get sealed on site after any trimming.
Spell those four out on the order and the slab arrives engineered to stay flat; leave them off and you are gambling on whatever the supplier stocks, which in a humid bath is a gamble you lose.
- Hollow-core
- Honeycomb interior, thin skins. Lightest and cheapest; warps and delaminates in bathroom humidity. Avoid for a Florida bath.
- Solid-core (composite)
- Dense engineered core. Stays flat through humidity, blocks more sound, accepts hardware solidly. The default for a Florida bathroom leaf.
- MDF, raw vs primed
- Raw MDF is highly moisture-reactive at unsealed edges; a fully primed and painted MDF leaf is far more stable. Never leave a cut edge unsealed in a bath.

Ventilation: Every Door Needs an Undercut
No matter which door you hang, the exhaust fan cannot pull humid air out of a sealed room — it needs makeup air to replace what it exhausts, and in a bathroom that makeup air comes under the door. This is the most overlooked detail in a Florida bath, and it directly drives mold control.
The code minimum and the practical gap
Under the FBC and the underlying IRC, a bathroom exhaust fan must move at least 50 cfm intermittent (or 20 cfm continuous). Where a door separates the exhaust point from its makeup air, the door is undercut so air can flow. The code minimum undercut is 1/2 in above the finished floor; in practice many installers leave closer to 3/4 in so the fan can actually draw its rated airflow without starving.

With the door shut and the fan on, confirm there is makeup-air flow under the door. If the gap is too tight, the fan short-cycles and the room stays humid — the start of a mold problem.

The clear-width target
The NKBA recommends a clear opening of at least 32 in at a bathroom door. Because the clear opening is roughly 2 in narrower than the slab, hitting 32 in clear usually means a 34-36 in door. A standard interior slab is 80 in tall and 1-3/8 in thick under WDMA sizing, which is the baseline for all three door types.
