Pair the notch with the right mortar

Notch and mortar are chosen together, not separately. For large tile in Florida the safe pick is a polymer-modified, large-and-heavy-tile mortar carrying the ANSI A118.15 designation with the non-sag "H" suffix. Its higher polymer load builds bond strength and flexibility, and the non-slump body keeps a heavy plank from sliding on a wall or sinking on a floor before it sets. Standard dry-set mortar in a deep notch tends to slump and starve the corners — the opposite of what the 95% rule needs.

The Setting Method, Step by Step

Full coverage on large tile is a sequence, not a single move. Trowel in one direction, back-butter the tile, set it, then slide it perpendicular to the ridges so they collapse and fill. Done in order, the steps reinforce one another.

  1. Step1

    Comb the slab in one direction

Flatten the Slab First
